The Shared Innovation Agenda of the Foia de Castalla is coordinated by AIJU and IVACE. Its objective is to activate systemic change in the territory, so that there is a transition to the Circular Economy.

This Shared Agenda for Circularity promotes spaces for debate on the impacts on the territory. It also seeks to identify opportunities for social and technological innovation in the territory of the region, and to open spaces for experimentation to create prototypes and pilot demonstrators.

In the process of creating sustainable projects in this Agenda, Monnou accompanies by facilitating agile dynamics of circular innovation, and providing communication support during the process.

A co-design sprint to activate circular transformation

With the Shared Agenda for the Circularity of the Foia de Castalla, we had begun to work collaboratively with different actors in the territory: companies, public administrations and associations, among others. A series of lines of action had been defined within the circular economy, among which the following were prioritized: waste and water.

To reactivate the collaborative process, define the sustainable projects to be carried out and create action plans, we created and facilitated a Circular Design Sprint. We conducted the Circular Design Sprint during a morning at AIJU facilities, working on two main axes within the circular economy: waste and water. The Design Sprint was carried out with the different agents of the territory that would later be involved during the process: companies, municipalities, associations... Thus, we facilitated the co-design of future circular projects to be implemented.

The Sprint begins with a warm-up phase. In a second phase, the participants identify sustainable projects that have already been proposed, review and redesign them, and make a selection based on their feasibility and potential impact. All of this is then pooled among the different work areas (waste and water).

In a third phase, specific working groups are created for each of the selected projects. Each group works on the strategy of a circular project. Finally, in the fourth phase, the groups share their progress.

Thanks to this agile process, it was achieved:

  • Cohesion of the different stakeholders and their alignment with the Agenda.
  • Select projects based on their feasibility and impact.
  • Create working groups interested in the development of each of the projects.
  • Create roadmaps for the development of each of the projects.
  • Establish the basis for future support to the projects to be developed.

Designing a circular economy for the territory

After the results of the first Sprint, we continue accompanying AIJU in the process of co-designing the projects with the different stakeholders. We create and facilitate collaborative dynamics so that each meeting serves to move forward in an agile way. We also tangibilize the ideas that appear, so that we define a roadmap that is clear to all stakeholders.

We also provide communication support during the process, both internally, with the different stakeholders involved in the projects, and externally, creating content about the progress of the process.

A creative methodology to facilitate collaboration and unlock innovation

The Monnou methodology is a strategic design methodology. That is, it incorporates the principles and practices of design (co-creation, prototyping and constant validation, tangibilization of ideas...) in the more general field of innovation. And, in the specific case of our methodology, of innovation oriented towards sustainability and positive impact.

Thus, the way in which we have used our methodology in this accompaniment serves to:

  • Identify the challenges present in the territory and prioritize those to be addressed.
  • Facilitate collaboration between the different actors in an agile way, and make communication between them effective. This streamlines the process of designing proposals for these challenges together with all stakeholders.
  • Tangibilize the ideas that appear, so that they are less ambiguous and can be tested early on.
  • Collectively evaluate the impacts of the proposals that are designed, and continuously improve.

Shared Agendas for Circularity is an example of co-creation to achieve the transition to a circular, collaborative and sustainable economy in a specific territory.
